Cockateils

I have two cockateils, but I can not tell if they are male or female. They both have quite bright cheek patches, one bird is about 10months old, the other is just over a year old. Can you assist in this. Plus they dont like being together, I keep them separate because the older bird packs at the younger one.

Answer:

Hi Christopher,

It is actually best that you keep them separated for a couple of reasons. If they are caged together, they might end up liking each other at some point, and when this happens, they usually will not remain tame. Since you don’t know their gender, if they are male and female, they are much too young to breed, so you don’t want to put a young pair together because it can cause the female to try to lay eggs when she is too young. If by any chance you plan to breed them, they need to be at least 2 years old and not related to each other. It sounds more like these are pets, and it’s common for two pet birds to not get along very well because they both want your attention. You can email me some pics to [email protected] and I will see if I can tell their sex. It depends on the color mutation, and if they both have their adult coloration already. They probably do, because most go through their first adult molt beginning around 6 months of age.
