A new presciption

Hello,I consulted a doctor for skin infection in my cockatiel. There are yellow crust in his wound. The vet give me some medicine like-
1-Tincture Iodine
2-Tetracyline powder
3-Vimeral
And also told me to apply turmeric paste for 1 week 2 times daily.
What’s your suggestion on this medicine. How many days does skin infection need to recover? Is it dangerous for his health? My cockatiel is sleepy all time.
Thank you
Shivam

Answer:

Hi Shivam,

Any kind of wound generally heals very quickly in birds. The medicines you have are different from what we would use in the US. But it sounds like these medicines will help. If something is going on internally, the tetracycline may help, and it is also effective for skin infections. Give him what the Vet prescribed and hopefully he will feel better and be more active.

The tincture iodine is a weak form of iodine and can disinfect the wound. The turmeric would have a similar effect. I would think you should gently clean the area twice a day with the iodine on a cotton swab or clean cloth, to remove any old ointment or paste, and maybe the yellow crust you are seeing. Once clean, you would apply the turmeric. It is best to always clean the previous paste away, before applying more.

The tetracycline is an antibiotic and can help the wound as well as any internal infection he might have. Give him this as prescribed by the vet.

The Vimeral is a concentrated vitamin. Only give him what the Vet prescribed so that he does not get too many vitamins.

I hope this new treatment helps,

Brenda
