Hi Winnie,
One thing to know is that it’s not in their nature for a parrot to be tame to a lot of people. A parrot can enjoy having people in the house – most parrots love noise and activity. But their wild instinct is to only have a close bond with their mate, so generally a parrot is not open to being handled by multiple people, especially if they are not living in the same household. This is just so you don’t have expectations of a parrot being social in the same way that a dog is. The best thing to do is to research the different species and visit Facebook groups where bird owners post. You can never do too much research. The Green Cheek Conures are great birds and are very popular as a first bird. There is no such thing as a starter bird. Whatever you decide on, you need to have a long term commitment and not get into it as a trial to see if you want one. Visit bird shops and bird rescues and even breeders and try to handle different birds to see what suits your personality. Birds are not the pet for everyone, so again, do your research. Parrots are an exotic pet – they are a wild species that is captive bred. So they will have behavior issues that can come up as the bird gets older or at certain times of the year. A parrot isn’t a pet you train once like you would a dog. They can be great pets, but you need to make sure it is the right pet for you and your household.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
Brenda
