Practice playing “doctor “

How can I practice taking my cockatoo ‘s heart rate? What else should we practice to keep trips to the vet less stressful? Does anyone take parrot vital signs or is part of avian health care?
I already do this in positive games with my dogs. What about cockatoos? Thank you.

Answer:

Hi Rene,

The heart rate in birds is so fast, it isn’t measured the same as with mammals. But there are things you can check regularly on your bird to make sure he is healthy. It may or may not help with Vet visits, but it’s good to keep up with your bird’s health. Dr. Stephanie Lamb demonstrates how to check out your bird at home in one of the webinars below, and in the second webinar, she discusses what goes on during a routine bird exam at your Avian Vet’s clinic.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
