Aging?

I have noticed that one if my lovebirds were unsteady on his feet. He is the oldest aged about seven or eight and one of his leg occasionally becomes useless. That leg slips far from him as if it’s injured. But then he seems to be fine and his leg gets better. I’m wondering if it’s sign of old age. But I also noticed that his mate is little hormonal aggressive and bites his legs. Is it because of frequent biting that causes the strange “ paralyzed” feet?

Answer:

Hi Lillium,

There can be many causes for this type thing. He may be having seizures, strokes. or he might have a tumor that is pressing on a nerve. Depending on how hard she is biting him, she might be injuring him. It could be age related. Lovebirds can live into their 20’s, but some only live to be 8-10 years old. She might be attacking him because she senses something is wrong with him. A sick or injured lovebird would be left behind by the flock. And sick parrot can draw the attention of predators, so instinctively, the flock will leave it behind or start attacking it to make it leave. If the mate keeps biting him, you may need to separate them.
