Feathers color changing

I have a couple of budgies and recently one of the birds feathers around her beak have gone from white to black. I feed them nutriberries, avicakes, some seesds, millet and apples and green vegs. She is an albino if that makes any difference. Otherwise she is healthy. Should i be worried?

Answer:

Hi Ann,

It sounds more like she has stained them, most likely from something she eats. Any dark green veggies can stain the feathers, and could look black rather than green. If you have any metal toys she chews on, or if she chews on the cage bars, this can cause feather discoloration if the metal has oxidized. As long as she is normal otherwise, I wouldn’t worry about it. If you watch her without her knowing it, you might be able to figure out what is staining the feathers.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
