Finch eggs

My birds have recently abandoned their nest. Nothing was moved or changed in their cage. Did they do this because the eggs are ready to hatch Or is it because the eggs are not good?

Answer:

Hi Susan,

It’s not always clear why a pair leaves the nest and eggs. If this is their first time, it may be inexperience. The eggs may not be good and the parents know this. If they have been breeding and have already had one or more clutches without a rest, they are likely just exhausted. If they do not go back to the nest, go ahead and remove it and discard the eggs. You should rest the pair from breeding for about 6 months and then give the nest back to them and let them try again.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
