Training Parrot to Let me touch it

Hi,
I trained my Alexandrine today and it’s so cool! I put him in the cage with no problems! I am only facing only one problem which is that it gets angry if I try to touch its head. He raises his beak so much that touching his head becomes impossible. If I try to pet him in the cheeks, he walks away a little bit. He never bites me.

Answer:

Hi,

As I have mentioned, Alexandrines and the related species all tend to be aloof. Most prefer shoulders and few like to be petted. Just as you approached everything else slowly, all you can do is keep trying and be patient. It’s better to rest your hand near him, and let him approach you. When you reach for him, even just to pet him, it is much like a predator trying to catch him and he will resist being touched. He may never accept petting. With parrots, you have to accept a bird’s individual personality and petting may not be in his plans or comfort zone.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
