Chicks +

The fledged chick won’t stay on the floor to eat. The higher he can be the more content.. Parents are feeding him still . No aggression since the little pecking this morning.. There are 4 chicks still in the box. Last one has about 7 days left ..Second chick will be out by tomorrow, that’s my guess. Watching closely. Thanks for the advise.

Answer:

Hi Linda,

OK, that makes sense – he feels safer up high. So you can try putting food cups higher next to where he sits. And spray millet is easy to clip to the side of the cage. I’d say lower all the perches, but then he might hang from the cage bars like a bat, and that will wear him out.

I bet the parents were trying to sit on the chick like they do in the nest. LOL I think these are first time parents? So they were likely confused with the chick out of the nest. They have only seen the chicks from above since they stand over or sit on the chicks.

So yes, watch closely, check the nest and take out any eggs if she lays more. With 5 chicks, you have a big age difference, so this is a sensitive time. The parents have to focus on chicks in and out of the nest and keep feeding all of them. Offer lots of food so the parents know they won’t run out and also to encourage the fledglings to wean.

I’ll keep an eye out for any posts from you this weekend in case you run into any problems.

Hope all goes well!

Brenda
