Doves are ground feeders, so they sort through what they find, moving unwanted items aside to get to food. This is done by tossing it aside with the beak. The best type of feeder for doves is a large, round, shallow dish, on the cage floor. They still will toss food from side to side, but with a larger dish, most of it will remain in the dish. It’s their natural instinct to sort their food, and this is how they are going to eat, so you may as well change to something that suits their way of eating or you will continue to have food to sweep up.
