cockatiel male

my male cockatiel is laying on the first clutch of 2 eggs but he does not eat and i am worried. i have bought so much different variety of foods to encourage him to eat, but he doesn’t . is this normal . please give me advice, i am worried he might loose weight, and too much for taking care of his first clutch of eggs with his mate. it is her first clutch also.

Answer:

Hi Diana,

Generally one parent sits all day and the other sits all night. Each bird should come out and eat and stretch legs & wings at some point. If only the male is sitting, this will not work. You can try to encourage the hen to sit by removing the male. Some males get aggressive and won’t let the hen in the box. So the birds have to be rotated letting one sit during the day and the other at night. Since this is their first clutch, they are learning. First clutches almost always fail, so keep that in mind. Also, the nest box must be removed between each cutch, whether the eggs hatch or not. Rest the pair for 6 months  in between each cutch, and then return the nest box and let them try again.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
