My parakeet has not layed eggs although I saw them mate more than once

Hello, I have a male and female pair of budgies that seem to have bonded nicely. The male feeds the female and they preen each other. I have seen them mate about 1 week ago but there are no signs of eggs. She stays in the nest box ALOT. And they like to eat the mineral block. What could be the problem. Thanks.

Answer:

Hi,

You need to be very patient when you try to breed birds. A week after mating isn’t very long at all. And mating does not always mean she will lay eggs. Some pairs might mate off and on for months before the hen finally lays eggs. They need a lot of privacy. If you are checking on them more than once or twice a day, she may not feel safe enough to lay eggs. You should feed them and check on them, and then leave them alone and only check on them again just before dark. You should be feeding them a balanced diet like pellets – not a seed mix. They also need leafy greens, chopped veggies and some fruit. Right now while they are nesting, feed them eggs daily – scramble an egg with the shell washed, crushed and cooked with the egg. This can help her get in condition to lay eggs.
