Someone is interested in having one of my young lovebirds. However, he lives in the mountains at 10,000 feet and my 6 month old lovebirds live with me at 5,280 feet. The Buyer is concerned because he bought lovebirds once before and they died shortly after moving in with him. Would my healthy young birds likely adjust ok? I told him that perhaps those earlier lovebirds were not healthy or were old. Please advise.

There isn’t a lot of information on altitude and pet birds. Studies on poultry only resulted in issues at extremely high altitudes – 30K and higher. The general consensus seems to be that birds are better equipped to adjust to higher altitudes because of their respiratory system and the fact that they do fly, and some species come from higher altitudes. As for why the other birds died, if it was sudden, the concern would be something airborne or a carbon monoxide problem. Levels could be high enough to kill a bird without affecting a human. So unfortunately I can’t say yes or no, but a lot of people at higher altitudes do have parrots.
