Plucking chicks – Dr. Lamb Webinar Feb 10

Is there a way to prevent parents parrotlets plucking their babies?

Answer:

When parents cause any problem to their babies the pair and their environment need to be evaluated. This behavior very well could be a stress related behavior and is not a natural thing to do as it would not be very beneficial in the wild. Many things should be considered and here are some questions to assess: Is the nesting area appropriate for the species? Is it in a good location? Is there not enough security or coverage for the parents to feel comfortable and safe? Is there a lot of noise around the nest box? Are there other birds around? How much interaction are people doing with the parents/ babies? Is the pair not the right fit? Is this the parents first clutch? Etc.
