male budgie cracking its own eggs

so my male budgie is trying to crack his eggs and then throws them to the ground. he is also constantly trying to get into the nesting box but the female won’t let him. should i separate them

Answer:

Hi,

The first thing to do is take the nest box down. They do not need a nest box if they are not ready to breed, and the male clearly isn’t ready. It sounds like they may not be bonded as a breeding pair. Are both birds at least 2 years old? If not, this is probably the issue. Young males are more interested in breeding than caring for eggs, so they break the eggs to get the female to mate again. If they are both old enough, give them more time to bond without a nest box in the cage. Unless you see them spending most of their time together, feeding each other and mating, then they  are not ready for breeding. Some birds simply are not compatible as a breeding pair, and some pairs are not good breeders. Unfortunately, once a bird develops the habit of breaking eggs, it may never stop. So you may not ever be able to breed this pair.
