Hi Kylie,
It is too soon to be trying to work with your birds. They need time to settle in and get used to you. This could take weeks. Then once you start working with them, you can’t try to touch them or grab them. Budgies are a prey animal, so when you try to grab them or touch them, it’s like a predator trying to catch them to kill them. They have to trust you first. But you do have a big problem by having two birds in the same cage. They will be almost impossible to tame because they have each other as companions and do not need human companionship. The best way to have a pet bird is to only have one bird in a cage, so that the bird can earn to trust you and will want companionship from you. Most likely your birds are going to bond with each other and not be interested in you. If these are young birds that were just put together, then you could separate the and possibly return one. But if these birds are old enough to tell they are male and female, and they were already together, they may already be bonded. This means you should not separate them. I’ll give you the links to our behavior and taming pages so you can try. But you may only be able to enjoy them by watching them interact with each other and their toys.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
Brenda
