Lovebird

My lovebird mama die she left seven weeks baby Lovebird, do I have to eat split father with the baby?

Answer:

Hi Felix,

I am sorry for your loss. If the chicks are eating on their own, you should separate them from the male. If he is still weaning them, hopefully he will keep feeding them as needed. You can’t let the young stay with him once he is weaned or in a few months he will try to mate with the females. You can’t allow any of these birds to mate with each other because they are related.

I’m not sure why the hen died, but when breeding birds, it is important to limit how much they breed. The nestbox should be removed as soon as the chicks leave it each time, and the parents should be rested for 6 months before returning the nest box. They also need good nutrition – a pelleted diet, greens, veggies, fruit & egg food. A seed mix is not adequate for breeding birds.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
