Baby finch

My baby finch seemed to be doing well parents attentive but now just found it dead on the pen floor looked to have feathers coming in. What could have happened? Do you think I should have put food and water on the pen floor in case it fell out of the nest?

Answer:

H Cheri,

I’m sorry you lost the chick. But this is not uncommon. Sometimes a chick just doesn’t survive. There may have been something wrong with it, maybe the parents didn’t feed it enough or with one chick, they might have over fed it. They fall out of the nest all the time and the parents go down and care for them, so it wasn’t that. And it wouldn’t have known what to do with food and water if the feathers hadn’t come in yet. Take the nest down and rest the parents for a few months before letting them try again. You should do this after every clutch.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
