Getting my cockatiel to go into his cage

How do I get my bird to go into his cage at night without having him bite me?

Answer:

Hi Brenda,

A treat that is only for bedtime can work. You can also try stick training the bird. The best approach is to go back to basics. Only let the bird come out on your hand, and he needs to be interacting with you. When you have handled him for a while, put him back in his cage. He needs to know he is dependent on you to let him out. When a bird is allowed to be out all day and do his own thing, he loses any dependence on you and decides he can come out anytime and doesn’t have to go back. If this back to basics doesn’t work, then try stick training. I’ll give you the links to our pages in behavior and training to help you out.
