Will something bad happen if my bird loses his tail feathers ?

While I was eating my food in the kitchen my bird (cockatiel) was on the door wind blew and shut the door and my cockatiel lost 7 of his tail feathers I want to ask if something bad will happen and my question is will something bad happen?

Answer:

Hi,

You definitely learned a very scary lesson as to why a bird should never be allowed to sit on an open door! This is a common accident, but often the poor bird gets killed. I am so glad your incident ended up with just some lost feathers. As long as the bird isn’t acting like he is hurt, he will be fine. If he is sleeping a lot, limping or having any problems, you need to take him to an avian vet. As for the tail feathers, new feathers will grow back in a few weeks or so. They molt feathers all the time so it’s normal for old feathers to fall out and new ones to grow in. These feathers just got pulled out early but he will get new feathers. And tell him no more sitting on doors!

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
