Cockatiel Laying Eggs

My single female cockatiel has laid her second egg. Her cage is large and is in one space in the laundry. She has limited daylight hours, I have rearranged her cage and removed anything she could see as nesty materials. I can’t move her actual home, as it is too large to move. So, is it ok for me to move her to a smaller transport cage and move that around the house or will that be too distressing for her?

Thank you

Answer:

Hi,

Since she started a clutch, she will probably lay 4-6 eggs this time. You can let her do this, as long as she stops after up to 8 eggs. Go ahead and take the eggs away. Then I think you have a good idea of putting her in a smaller cage at times. You might try using the smaller cage as a sleeping cage, but don’t cover it or make it too cozy or she will think it’s a wonderful big nest! Continue with the shorter hours and other changes that are possible. I will mention that some laundry rooms stay warmer than the rest of the house, so if she starts another clutch, you may need to find a solution that involves relocating her cage. You can also take her to an avian vet for a hormone implant. They have a good success rate and can last for a few months, but it is expensive. I’d try rotating her between the small and large cage first and see if that helps.
