nipping

I have a 5 month old budgie who I have had since he hatched, handled him and everything but now he is getting nippy when I try to do anything in his cage . He is a male I think he is going through puberty but how do stop this behavior.

Answer:

Hi,

The bird is young to be hormonal already. Budgies can still be territorial about their cage. The females are more likely to act this way. You need to respect that this is the bird’s own space. You might try taking him out of the cage and putting him on a play stand when you need to clean his cage or move something inside of it. Budgies are an exotic pet, and can’t be trained like a dog. Their behavior is instinctive, and rather than struggling with him, you have to understand what is motivating a behavior and then work with him. I’ll give you the links to our behavior and training pages to help you understand him better.
