I’m so sorry for your loss. Only a vet could find out why the bird died, by examining the bird and running tests. Did you stop feeding the bird formula when you saw him eat on his own? A baby bird still needs to be hand fed while he is learning to eat. If you stopped his formula, then he may not have eaten enough on his own and that may be what happened. That is only a guess. Unfortunately, there are many reasons why a young bird might die.
