Grey parrot stitch

Hi
My 5 months old African grey parrot flews from a hight of window and fell down. Consequently, it was a deep wound on his chest. We took him to get Dr. He prescribed an antibiotic for a week and suggested that he would naturally heal. But he couldn’t, so Dr stitched his wound under local anesthesia. It’s his 3rd day of procedure
Now Dr says that his skin isn’t recovering. His skin is getting dead. I am really upset. Can you please suggest. How can we help him
Note Dr didn’t prescribed any medication or antibiotics after atitch

Answer:

Hi,

This is a common injury in Greys when they fall, because of their skeletal shape. What happens is the breast or keel bone cuts through the chest from the inside. It takes time to heal, and usually the bird needs some type of collar to prevent it from causing more damage. I can only recommend that you seek a second opinion if you are not confident with the treatment that the bird is currently getting. A vet might choose to keep the bird on antibiotics and may prescribed a topical treatment. I’m sorry there is nothing we can do to help. Please use the search on this page to try to located an Avian Vet near you. https://www.aav.org/page/finding_a_veterinarian

Take care,

Brenda
