Cockatiel breeding

Hello! I set up a nest box for my cockatiel pair, they have been mating for the past week, how will I know when she is getting ready to lay eggs? They are both in and out of the nest box all day. (I have a camera set up)

Answer:

Hi,

These are very positive signs that they may lay eggs soon, but it’s not something you can put a time frame on. Some birds do this and never lay eggs. All you can do is be patient and hope they settle down and lay eggs. The parents should be eating a nutritionally balanced diet such as pellets – a seed diet does not provide adequate nutrition. They should also be eating leafy greens, chopped veggies and some fruit. For breeding they should get a daily egg food – this can be a commercial dry egg food, or you can cook an egg with the shell washed, crushed and cooked with the egg.
