Breeding a blind african grey

Should a blind african grey be allowed to breed

Answer:

Hi,

While blind birds can do well, breeding is not something that I would recommend. A blind bird’s cage should be set up where everything is in the same place, all the time, and the bird will learn where everything is and do well. But breeding involves too many changes and I can’t imagine a blind bird can figure it out. Parrots are very hard to breed as it is, so if a healthy parrot has problems learning how to be a good parent, I just don’t think a blind bird can do this. Also, since parrots are a prey species, they will often drive off or kill a sick or injured bird in the flock because a bird like that can attract predators. I think whether male or female, a blind bird would not likely be accepted as a mate, and might be in danger from the other bird if put in a breeding set up. That’s not to say it can’t have a companion, but the cage should not be set up with a nest box. A same sex companion would be the best choice.
