Cockatiel Chicks

I have 3 Cockatiels chicks 12 days old. We have just found the mother bird dead in the nesting box. The father cockatiel was in and out of the nest but now will not go back into the nesting box. what should I do?

Answer:

Hi,

I’m sorry for your loss. If the father isn’t feeding them, then you will need to hand feed them or they will die. Hopefully there is a Vet or pet shop in your area that can help. You may not be able to keep them alive at this age, but you can try.

As for the female, often when a female dies during nesting, she was either deficient in nutrients due to an inadequate diet or she has been laying too many eggs or being allowed to breed over and over without a rest. Many owners do not realize how much food a breeding pair needs when they have chicks, or that it must be a high quality, nutritionally balanced food along with leafy greens, veggies and an egg food. Breeding birds need to be rested after every clutch, even if the eggs do not hatch, for at least 6 months before giving them the nest box back and letting them try again. She may have had an underlying illness and the stress of laying eggs and caring for chicks caused her to succumb. Again, I’m sorry she died.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
