Aggressive blu parakeet

Hi , I got a 3 month old parakeet a while back. He is now 9 months older lad. He bites constantly and is aggressive. He has a large cage with his favorite toys. I have never chased him or forced him to do anything can you give me some advice

Answer:

Hi,

It sounds like you probably have a female. The females tend to be aggressive and bite. Some males will act that way, but it’s not that common, and more likely from an older bird that has never been handled. The cere is not always an indication of gender with parakeets, especially with the pale, pastel or solid colors. The males and females tend to both have a lavender color cere. If your bird’s entire cere is bright, solid blue then it’s a male, but if it’s lavender or white with a little bit of blue, then based on that and the bird’s behavior, you have a female. I can give you the links to our behavior & training pages to try to help you. But this bird simply may not be pet quality. A scared bird is still trainable. An aggressive bird that actively bites is probably better suited for a breeder or in an aviary with other parakeets. It’s also possible that this bird was older than what you were told when you bought it. The sex would still be unclear in a 3 month old. And the fact that this bird is so aggressive makes me wonder if someone else had already tried to train it and returned it. Young parakeets are more likely to run from you. Aggression means the bird is not scared and was possibly with someone who attempted to train it the wrong way. You might want to get it a same sex companion, and then get a young parakeet that you can handle. Maybe find a place that has handfed or truly young birds that can still be worked with. You are better off getting an 8 week old bird. You can email a pic to [email protected] and I can see if I can tell the gender of your bird. Meanwhile here are some links to check out.
