Size of aviary

Reading about aviary sizes, people always tell you cm/bird or cubic inch per bird. But this does not work for a small number of birds (yielding absurdly small sizes). What is a minimum size for an aviary for two budgies for example? What kind of rule of thumb could one apply in such a situation?

Answer:

Hi,

There really isn’t a rule of thumb. Some say get the largest cage you can afford. They do not like tall cages. Since they are grass parakeets, they do like some floor space. It depends on your space and budget. They can manage to fly in very small cages. Try finding something with 2-3 feet of flight length, and maybe 2 feet wide. You also need to make sure the bar spacing is close enough, ½ inch or less – don’t accidentally buy a cage intended for a larger parrot.
