Baby cockatiel and Mom trying to mate

Hi,
I have 3 cockatiels.. 2 males and one female. One of my males is the biological baby of my other 2 birds. The dad’s name is Banana, the mom’s name is alaska and the baby is London. Both parents are around 4 years old and London is almost a year old. I’ve been letting them live together in the same cage because they have been getting along really well and my dad wouldn’t let me get a high quality cage for the baby to live in. Just a few minutes ago, I caught London trying to breed with Alaska and I immediately stopped him. There is no where for her to lay any eggs, but i’m still worried that if they try to breed without me there, It can end up in health problems for the mom. I have to leave for a few days, but my mom said that we can get a new cage for London. I have another cage right now, but it is cheap and stresses him out. Do you think it’s okay to leave them in the same cage until I get a new one for London or should I move him into the cheap cage temporarily? Let me know, Thanks.

Answer:

Hi,

I would go ahead and separate them. And if the female ends up laying eggs within the next couple of weeks, discard the eggs. If won’t make her sick to breed with her offspring, but any resulting chicks often have deformities or serious health issues.
