How to tame a pair of adopted cockatiels in a short time?

I’ve kept a pair of adopted cockatiels more than 1 year ago. Worry about they may get bored within the cage, I let them out the cage with the windows nearly closed and mosquito net installed beforehand, before going out.

As they are used to be together before being adopted, they are kept in the same large cage, where several perches and toys attached around the cage. Whenever entering the room where the cage is located, I call their names in soft voice so that they may get used to this.

However, they seem to prefer staying each other to interacting with me. This makes me question what should be done, apart from do more interaction by sitting next to them, even if providing the treats to their positive behaviours. How to tame them shortly without further causing them stressed out?

Answer:

Hi,

When two birds share a cage, they end up bonding and no longer want to be handled. They might be OK being around people, but not being handled. It is highly unlikely they will ever be tame as long as they are together. You can try separating them, but if they are closely bonded, it’s best to let them stay together even if it means you won’t be able to handle them. There is no such thing as quick taming or training with birds. They are not a domesticated species, so they do not have any instinct to be tamed. Taming a bird can take days, weeks, months years or never – it depends on the bird and the person. And again, with two birds together, taming isn’t likely.
