Baby Budgies & Parents

Our female budgie, Tiki, had 3 healthy baby chicks that she raised with Miko, the male. The oldest, Coco (male) just turned 6 weeks old on 7/12, the middle, Nuni (female) and youngest, Topi (female) all flock around the house with their parents during the day and then the parents and babies sleep in separate cages at night. The question we have is if it is possible to maintain the family together in our home without any issues?

Answer:

Hi,

This is a wait and see situation. However, if you keep them all basically together, you can’t breed anymore. You would have no way to know who mates with who, plus nesting boxes will trigger territorial behavior and fighting. And brother and sister will mate, or parent and offspring will mate. Do not give them anything they can use as a nest – bird huts or tents, boxes, etc. If any eggs are laid, you need to discard them. As long as you keep breeding and nesting out of the equation, they may do just fine.
