First egg

We have 22 yr old blue and gold. Awoke this morning to find broken egg on bottom of cage. We are shocked…will she lay just the one? How long before this will happen again( her cycle??)Any info is helpful! Thank you.

Answer:

Hi,

It isn’t unusual for a large parrot to start laying eggs at this age or older. She may lay one or two more. There will always be a day between eggs. Take the eggs away, and do not give her anything to use as a nest – no cardboard, boxes, etc. Don’t let her shred paper because this can be a hormone trigger. It’s hard on a hen to form and lay eggs, so it’s best to try to discourage egg laying, which means avoiding the triggers. You should not cuddle with her and you should limit petting to only her head and neck. Parrots do not have a cycle. They will nest when the conditions are right – longer days, warmer weather and abundant food plus a safe place to nest. If she does this again and again, you may need to discuss hormone treatments with your Vet.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
