Leaving my budgie at home for a month

I have to go in a trio to a different country for about a month to sort some stuff out and I have two budgies at home that I am worried about. I have bought two automatic water and food feeders and I am planning to leave their cage open so they can free roam. I would obviously make sure to get rid of anything dangerous (plants, mirrors, etc…) and I would have someone come a couple times a week. I am still super nervous that they might get lonely or bored but i know that their water and food situation should be fine because so far the automatic feeders have nvm able to stay clean and with food/water for a bit over a week. Like I mentioned before, ideally someone would be able to come every two days and check on them, refill their food and water, and maybe play with them or play some music for a little bit. Do you think this would work out or should I look into budgie kennels that could keep them for a month? I think a kennel would stress them out a bit tho, because my birds don’t seem to like being in new places.

Answer:

Hi,

I do not even recommend leaving pet birds alone for one night. When the owner is away, they get into trouble. I would never leave them alone, and leave them out of the cage. You will most likely end up with two dead birds. They get into things they never would when the owner is away. Pet birds should never, ever under any circumstances be out of the cage unless they are being supervised. And they can empty the food out of those feeders or plug up the waterer. If you can’t have someone come in at least once a day, then boarding the birds is the best option.
