New hatch chicks killed

I raised my pineapple Green Cheek pair years ago. They bonded young, and chose to pair together. They have raised clutches in the past, good parents. Both are not skittish, as I hand fed the parents, so they will let me check on nest with no issue, etc. But, this year, they laid 6 of which 4 fertile. First egg hatched, and chick was dead when I checked. I check am and pm. I examined, and could not definitively tell if it was killed. Second hatched, and it was obvious the parents had eaten part of the torso/stomach area. I pulled remaining eggs, and am incubating. Not looking forward to day one feeding! They are on a good diet of pellet daily, fresh foods every other day and seed weekly. They are not fans of the Nutri berries, or avi cakes. (Big birds love them). She has a cuttle bone, and I add a little calcium in bird breads and fresh foods. Is there a deficiency I am unaware of? Or could it be some other factor that is causing this to happen? Thank you so much for your advice.

Answer:

Hi,

Are the parents related? They definitely should not be allowed to breed if they are related. If they are not related, how often have the had chicks? At the most, they should have two clutches per year. If they have had more than that, then that could be the issue. For now, I would take their box down and rest them from breeding. And if they are related, I would not let them breed again. If they aren’t, then let them rest for up to a year, and then let them try again.
