Mating

Hi There. In one of your answers to another query you mentioned as soon as the parakeet parents or the young chick’s leave the nest, it is best to remove the nest to allow the mother to rest. However I noticed that the couple started mating even before the chicks leave the nest. What do you suggest?

Answer:

Thank you for reaching out to Ask Lafeber. It’s completely normal for parakeet parents to begin mating again even while their current chicks are still in the nest, but allowing back‑to‑back clutches is very hard on the hen’s body. Once the chicks are fully feathered, regulating their own temperature, and no longer needing to be brooded, it’s best to remove the nest even if the parents are showing mating behavior. Removing the nest helps break the hormonal cycle, prevents the hen from becoming calcium‑depleted, and gives her time to rest and recover. You can also rearrange the cage, limit dark or nest‑like spaces, and ensure she has plenty of calcium and a stable light schedule to help reduce hormonal triggers.
