Nut Meats
I have a Meyer Parrot. I would like to know what kind of nuts are best to feed her; also should they be eaten raw or roasted?

Thanks for reaching out to Ask Lafeber. Meyer’s parrots can safely enjoy a variety of nuts as a tasty and nutritious treat, including almonds, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, pistachios (unsalted), Brazil nuts, and even small amounts of macadamia nuts, though richer options should be given sparingly due to their high fat content. Nuts should always be unsalted and free from flavorings, as added sodium and chemicals can harm birds, and you should avoid moldy or low-quality nuts—especially peanuts unless they are high-grade and safe for human consumption. In general, raw nuts are the best choice because they retain more nutrients and contain no added oils, although dry-roasted, unsalted nuts are still acceptable in moderation; however, oil-roasted varieties should be avoided entirely. Nuts should only make up a small portion of your parrot’s diet—about 5–10%, or roughly 1–3 small pieces per day—since too many can lead to obesity or liver problems. Offering nuts in the shell occasionally can also provide mental stimulation and enrichment, making them not just a nutritious snack but a fun activity as well.
