5 week old quaker parrot flew into window

After won’t move my vet said prop him up in a towel hand feed every 4 hours if the up position in 48 hours give up hope that he recover but he is showing movement trying to get up multiple time is there hope should I find a new vet

Answer:

Hi,

I’m sorry this has happened but the good thing is he is still alive. More often than not, this type accident is fatal. It is a good sign that he is wanting to move around. He should be on an anti-inflammatory medicine. The swelling can keep getting worse and cause more damage. I would seek a second opinion. Birds have an amazing ability to recover from head and spine injuries. There is no time limit. I’ve had completely paralyzed parrots that eventually fully recovered. In some cases, they might be immobile for weeks or months before showing any signs of recovery. And one took a year to be able to walk and fly again. So the fact that your guy is trying to move already is good. But you need to limit his activity to give him time to recover and not let him re-injure himself. As long as he is alert and shows interest in food and his surroundings, do not give up hope! If possible, find a board certified avian vet who will have the experience and know how well a parrot can recover from this type injury.
