African Grey

My Gray’s eye pupil is black and the white is golden in color. Why?

Answer:

Hi Jackie,

This is perfectly normal. With Congo & Timneh Greys, the eyes will start out very dark when they are young, almost appearing to be black. As the bird gets older, the eye color will gradually change to a lighter grey color, and then finally take on the golden color that is the natural mature adult eye color. The golden color will generally get lighter as the bird ages, and appears to be almost white on an older bird. With the right lighting and angle, you can see the eye is actually a very light golden or straw color.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
