African Grey Egg Laying

My African Grey just laid an egg. I have read to just leave things alone for 3 weeks. I am currently enrolled in the Karen Pryor Academy. Working with my Grey is part of the school’s program. Is it possible to still work with my Grey doing tricks and fun behaviors or is it better to leave her alone?

Answer:

Hi Leesa,

I would go ahead and discard the egg and continue to work with your Grey. There is no proof that leaving the eggs makes a difference. It seems like it does with some birds, but with others it doesn’t, so since you have an activity for her, that would be better. Teaching your bird behaviors and tricks is one way to distract a bird from hormonal behaviors, so I would continue with her training.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
