African grey – health

My 15 months old Congo African Grey had red feathers on his chest and legs. However, over the last few months, he is losing his red feathers.

Will his red feathers grow back?

Many thanks,
Monica

Answer:

Hi Monica,

Most likely he will not grow red feathers there again. Grey chicks will grow red feathers like this sometimes, but they are generally molted out and replaced with normal grey feathers as it gets older. Red feathers can also grow after an injury or when a grey plucks. Breeders have tried to breed for the red, and apparently there are some “red factor” greys, but this would be a mutation, which is basically a genetic flaw or weakness. So it is actually an indication of good health that he has not regrown any red feathers.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
