Amazon parrot

Feathers are not comming back after molting

Answer:

Hi Marlene,

If your bird has bare areas of skin showing, then he has been plucking his feathers, not molting. A parrot will sometimes look a bit tattered when going through a heavy molt, but generally other than seeing a lot more feathers than usual in the cage, a bird doesn’t look much different during a molt. Important feathers such as tail and wing feathers are not all lost at once, because the parrot still needs to be able to fly and get around while molting. Either way, lack of new feathers growing in or having bare skin showing, you need to go ahead and take your Amazon to an Avian Vet to determine the cause. It can be from many causes including malnutrition, skin infection or some diseases. A vet can help diagnose the problem and recommend treatment.
