Hi Karen,
It sounds like something is disturbing him at night. Maybe something has changed in his environment like a new location for his cage, a new pet or person, or a new object in the room. If his cage isn’t covered at night, try covering it. Birds can be disturbed by things they see outside, noises, lights such as from a passing car or at a neighbor’s house, or other birds or animals. Pacing is a sign of stress with Amazons. They will do it when they feel threatened, or even if they want to come out of the cage. But it isn’t normal at night. Birds are prey animals, so a new noise, shadow, light, etc can be alarming to a bird. A car going by might make lights or a shadow move across the ceiling. Feather plucking can have a medical cause, or be behavioral. Given the pacing at night, he may be feather plucking due to stress. Observe what is going on around him when he starts this pacing – look where he is looking and see what he might be looking at. It could be something small, but whatever it is, it is making him feel insecure. This is where the cage cover comes in, because if he stops pacing, then you know he is seeing something that alarms him.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
Brenda
