Ask the Vet Nov 18 – Grey missing feathers

Arnie a 7month grey has still not grown back his feathers on his bald patch on his head. You thought they would grow back in six weeks. We thought it was done by a corner in the cage, but not sure now. Do you have any ideas why this 7 month old male grey has not grown back his head feather. we sent you a picture a few months ago. we have a vet appt on dec 16th. i am anxious for any ideas. Not really seeing any pin feathers at this point.

Answer:

Hi Ron,

Here is Dr. Tully’s response:

If the feathers were rubbed off, then the feathers will not regrow until the new feathers develop and push the feather quills out of the follicles.  So, my thoughts are give it a year or so for molting to occur if all else looks well at the site. The feathers may not have been “pulled out” which would result in a much quicker regrowth.
