Ask the Vet November 18 – Pionus Health

“My female (DNA-tested) pionus had a short stint in a hospital after biting into a Naproxen liquid capsule. After that, some (<50%) her poops include increased urine, a lot of urates and pretty much not any feces. Her latest CBC and chemistry taken
3 weeks after hospital discharge show a perfect picture of health (only bile acid wasn’t reported). What should I do? Urinalisis, something else? What can be causing it 2 months after hospital discharge?”

Answer:

Hi Daniela,

Here is Dr. Tully’s response:

I would monitor the bird’s weight to make sure the bird is eating. Also monitor water intake to see if the bird is drinking excessive amounts of water.  If the bird is drinking excessive amounts of water, then there may be a kidney issue.  But at this time with the percentage of feces with increased urine I would not believe it is a kidney issue at this time. It could be related to diet if there is more of a water-based (fruit, vegetables) offering being provided. By all information provided it appears your veterinarian is doing a very good job in assessing your bird’s overall condition.
