Baby Lorikeet constantly vocalizing/screaming

Hi Labefer, I have a baby rainbow lorikeet that is around 11 weeks old and can already fly a little. However, Ever since i got her she has been constantly screaming whenever i come into view, while feeding, and even after being fed, as long as she sees a human she will scream non-stop. I don’t mind this too much but I’m afraid it will carry on into adulthood if i dont resolve it. Is this an issue? will it grow ot on its own? If no how can i fix this? thanks!

Answer:

Hi Meg,

This is normal for baby parrots and they usually outgrow this once they are fully weaned. The parents feed the chicks and then sit on them, or as they get older, the parents even leave the nest for a while. We tend to over stimulate hand feeding chicks. They would normally only be woken by the parents at feeding time. So when you come into the room, the bird thinks it should be fed again. This is why once you begin weaning, you must put a variety of foods in the cage, and then leave where she can’t see or hear you so she will concentrate on the foods and not on wanting you to feed her.

Thank you for your question,

Brenda
