Baby zebra finches

There is hardly no nesting material in the nest with 3 new babies in them. I’m scared that the babies will get hurt due to the holes in the nest. What should I do?

Answer:

Hi Lizette,

All you can do is leave them alone and hope it works out. If you interfere with the nest, the parents are likely to stop caring for the chicks. They will feel like their nest isn’t safe anymore and will abandon it.

Be sure to remove the nest as soon as the chicks leave it. Otherwise the parents may nest again and not wean the chicks. The parents need to be rested for about 6 months before you let them breed again. They do not need a nest during this time. A nest is only for when they are breeding. There are nest liners you can buy, so you might try one of those next time, and then let them add nesting material on top of the liner.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
