bird for apartment

Hi. My moluccan cockatoo died recently after 35 years. I’m moving to an apt. and would like to get another bird. I’m used to cockatoos and want a bird that isn’t too noisy but loves to cuddle. Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking of one of the smaller cockatoos like a Goffin’s or Bare Eyed but I’m concerned they may be too loud. I’d appreciate your thoughts. Thanks Diane

Answer:

Hi Diane,

I am very sorry to hear about your Moluccan. If screaming is a concern, I do not recommend any species of Cockatoo. I have a brick house and I can hear my 40 something year old Goffin’s screaming when I am outside. Basically parrots are loud. It’s how they communicate in the wild and most species can be heard from a great distance.

Some species are not as likely to scream a lot. Amazons & African Greys tend to talk more than scream, Pionus are fairly quiet and some of the smaller conures, like the green cheek mutations, are not as loud. All of this is generally speaking because any bird can be an exception. I think you should wait until you have lived in the apartment for a bit to get an idea of how much you can hear the neighbors or any pets in other apartments. Sadly parrots are not an ideal apartment pet if noise is a concern.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
