Blindness in Grey

Over 2 years my grey has gone gradually blind in stages. She is now totally blind, and three vets have no idea why. The final stage was hyphema which finished the sight completely. She eats well, and still talks and is active. I bought her in Africa, have had her over 30 years but have no idea of her age. Recently, perhaps only once a week she has watery stinky poops, but they are usually without odor and diet has not changed. I did try cbd oil which the avian felt was a good idea. I stopped the oil due to the smell, and could the oil contribute to the smell? I was going to have labs done, but it no longer smells. I love her dearly, so any comments are welcome. Thanks,

Answer:

Hi Chris,

I’m sorry to hear about your grey, but luckily blind birds can do very well. The obvious is to keep things the same in her cage and make sure her food and water is within easy reach. I don’t know enough about the CBD oil to comment on whether that could cause an odor in her feces. I think the best thing to do is check with your Avian Vet. Any change in dropping can be the first indication of a problem. With her history, I think a check up is the best thing to do.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
