Blue and gold Macaw

Hi. We have a pair of Blue and Gold Macaws and the female is laying, actually dropping from the branch she sits on, her eggs on the cage floor.
What can I do?

Answer:

Hi Elena,

Do you have the right kind of nest box for them? Have they been going into it? Are these birds possibly too young to be breeding yet? They should be a minimum of 7 years old. An immature pair will make mistakes like this, but a pair just starting out will, too. All you can do is make sure you have the right kind of nest box, have it attached as high as possible to the outside of the cage, feed them a nutritious diet and give them plenty of privacy. They should be in their own room ideally – definitely not in a family room. They will either figure things out of they won’t. Macaws aren’t particularly easy to breed, and not all birds will be good breeders. Be patient with them and hopefully they will start using the nest box.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
